I am writing in support of Dr. Leonard Brown as a Republican write-in candidate for the Knox County Commission District 5-C seat in the upcoming election.

I have known Dr. Brown both personally and professionally for nearly a decade. He is very actively involved both in community affairs and in professional organizations. For several years, he was on the board of directors of the Discovery Center at the Children’s Museum. He is currently the chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Otolaryngology Association.

As a practicing physician in Knoxville, he is well aware of budgets, of schedules, of how to deal with people, and of how to get things done in a logical and timely fashion. Being a resident of West Knoxville, with teenage children, he will be vitally interested in the education of our students. Road conditions and bringing new businesses to West Knoxville are other topics we have recently discussed.

Dr. Brown, I am convinced, will bring the same dedication, enthusiasm, and common sense to Knox County Commission that he does to his medical practice. I urge voters in the 5-C District to get out and vote and to consider a write-in vote for Dr. Leonard Brown.

Leonard Brown backed for commission seat

I wish to express my support for Dr. Leonard Brown, a write-in candidate for Knox County Commission Seat 5-C.

I have known Brown for the last 14 years and have found him to be an outstanding leader in both the civic and medical communities. He is active in his church, served on the board of directors of the Discovery Center and as secretary for the Knoxville Academy of Medicine. He has been Cub Scout master and assistant scout master for local Boy Scout troops.
Brown has provided free indigent care through the Interfaith Health Clinic and served as a delegate to the Tennessee Medical Association and chairman of the board of governors of his specialty academy.

Before entering private practice, he served in the Army as an officer. His ability to integrate, synthesize and come to logical and well-thought-out solutions to problems is not questioned.

It is my opinion that Brown does not seek this position for personal benefit but has a vision and passion where Knox County should proceed in the future. I ask the voters in 5-C to seriously consider Leonard Brown for their county commissioner.

Knoxville News Sentinel gives Leonard the "edge"

Seat C: This is for the seat currently held by John Griess, who is term-limited. Two good write-in candidates, Larry Danner and Leonard Brown, are seeking the Republican nomination, with no Democratic opposition in the general election. We give the edge to Brown, a medical professional, who has been active in GOP local and state politics. He is a member of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine and served on the board of the Discovery Center. If elected, Brown would work for safer roads in the district, particularly Northshore Drive, work for reasonable development over urban sprawl and work to improve schools to train students for the high-tech jobs needed in the community.

PRESS RELEASE

Leonard Brown MD, a local Ear Nose and Throat doctor with offices in Farragut and Downtown Knoxville, has announced his “write-in” campaign for County Commissioner district 5-C. Dr. Brown is a livelong citizen of Tennessee and relocated his practice to Knoxville from LeBonheur Children’s Hospital and Methodist Hospital in Memphis in 1991. Leonard is currently the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He also serves on a local hospital Board of Trustees.

Dr. Brown stated he decided to run after he realized the confusion caused by the recent State Supreme Court ruling regarding term limits. Dr. Brown has been continually involved with Republican politics since his teens with the exception of his military service. “ Army officers are restricted from political involvement.” Dr. Brown stated, “ they serve at the will of the people and the pleasure of the Commander-in-Chief.”

Asked about paper ballots, Dr. Brown commented that “in the military, all of our absentee votes were on paper ballots…” and “ that while it takes a little more time, it isn’t that difficult.”

Dr. Brown is married to Karen Brown the Republican Committeewoman for the seventh senate district. Karen is a registered nurse and she and Leonard were high school sweethearts and have been married 30 years. They have three children Stacy, who is in her third year of medical school at University of Tennessee, Nathaniel, a freshman at Texas A&M studying Computer Science in the Engineering department, and Benjamin a high school junior who is interested in music and the ministry.

The loss of one of Nathaniel’s classmates in an automobile accident on Northshore is one of the reasons Dr. Brown is so concerned about community and highway safety. “Our roads need to be constructed for safety, including lighting for dangerous intersections and designed to enhance, and not limit the flow of traffic.”

Dr. Brown’s brother is an art teacher at Hillsboro High School in Nashville, and his dad was a teacher before buying a small town furniture store. Leonard states that because of this and his daily contact with students and parents in his practice of medicine he understands the problems encountered in the school systems. “Have you ever noticed how involved the parents of the sports teams and band are with their children’s activities? This is one of the reasons those students usually excel. We should encourage this same kind of mentoring and involvement on every level. Unfortunately, because of the pressures of our community, we are losing many good professionals; teachers, doctors and nurses for example, to areas with better pay and lower cost of living. I believe we can reverse that trend and make Knoxville the crown jewel of Tennessee. People living in Franklin should want to move here instead, but to do that, we have to look to the future needs of our town, state and nation.”

When asked about term limits and the recent legal action taken by several incumbent commissioners, Dr. Brown observed that a friend of his, Jay Chandler, summed it up well when he said people should “light a candle rather than curse the darkness”. Dr. Brown elaborated, “In other words, instead of complaining about the confusion which has occurred because of a rather late ruling by the Tennessee State Supreme Court, we need to use this opportunity to show just how dedicated and innovative our community can be by turning out and making the extra effort to ask for paper ballots and write in the candidates of your choice.”

One example Dr., Brown pointed out was Kelvin Moxley, a write in candidate for County Clerk and the only Republican running for that position. “As I understand it, if we don’t ask for paper ballots and vote for Kelvin, there will be no opposition to the Democrat candidate in August. I just don’t think that is what our founding fathers intended.”

Alexander Cain and Garry Strand have both assured Dr. Brown they are withdrawing from their write-in campaigns and their plans to support him, although Mr. Cain has already cast his own ballot.
